Croatia for Honeymoons & Anniversary Trips: The Complete Guide
Croatia: The European Honeymoon Most Couples Haven't Discovered Yet
Picture-perfect coastlines, medieval cities, world-class wine, and crystal-clear Adriatic waters — at a fraction of what you'd spend on the same trip in Italy or Greece. After 20 years of planning romantic European getaways, Croatia has quietly become one of our favorite recommendations. Here's why we think it should be on your radar too.

Why Croatia? (And Why Now?)
For couples who have already done the obvious European honeymoons — Italy, Greece, France — Croatia feels like a delicious secret. It has everything you'd want from a Mediterranean trip: walled medieval cities, island hopping by boat, fresh seafood, sunset cocktails on stone terraces overlooking the Adriatic. But it manages to feel less polished than its neighbors. Less hectic. More like discovering something for yourself.
That said, the secret isn't entirely a secret anymore. Croatia has been steadily rising on the honeymoon radar since Game of Thrones introduced the world to Dubrovnik a decade ago, and the country has spent the years since carefully improving its infrastructure for upscale travelers without losing its essential character.
So if you've been waiting for the "right time" to consider Croatia — this is it. The hotels are excellent. The wine scene has matured. Direct flights from major US cities are easier than ever. And it's still significantly more affordable than Italy or Greece for comparable luxury.
- Stunning Mediterranean coastline without the Amalfi crowds
- A mix of beach relaxation and city exploration
- A second-time honeymoon or milestone anniversary that feels fresh and unexpected
- Excellent food and wine without Italy's price tag
- Island-hopping on the Adriatic (one of the world's most beautiful seas)
The Best Time to Visit Croatia
Croatia is a seasonal destination — most coastal hotels, restaurants, and ferries operate from late April through mid-October. Outside that window, much of the country (especially the islands) effectively shuts down.
That said, when you go within that window matters a lot for the experience you'll have.
| Month | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| May | Mild weather (low 70s), everything just opening, fewer crowds. Sea is still chilly for swimming. |
| June | Our top recommendation. Warm but not hot, sea warming up, long days, manageable crowds. |
| July | Peak season. Hot, packed, expensive. Avoid if you can. |
| August | Even more peak. Locals leave on holiday and Europe descends. Beautiful but intense. |
| September | The sweet spot. Warm seas, fewer crowds, golden light, gorgeous weather. |
| October | Quieter, cooler, charming light. Some restaurants and ferries start winding down. |
If you're planning your honeymoon, aim for early to mid-June or early to mid-September. You'll get warm seas, beautiful weather, and the best of Croatia without the August chaos. Anniversary travelers with flexible dates often prefer late September for the same reasons plus even better pricing.
Where to Go: Croatia's Most Romantic Regions
One of the joys of planning a Croatia trip is that you don't have to choose just one place — the country is small enough that most couples can comfortably visit two or three regions in 10–14 days. Here's how we typically think about it:
🏰 Dubrovnik & the Southern Dalmatian Coast
Dubrovnik is the showstopper — a fully intact medieval walled city perched on the Adriatic. Walking the ancient walls at sunset, with the orange-tile rooftops below and the sea stretching out to the islands, is one of those bucket-list travel moments that lives up to the hype.
The city itself is small enough to explore in 2–3 days. Stay in Old Town if you want maximum atmosphere (and don't mind narrow stone streets); stay just outside the walls in Ploče or Pile for more space and easier logistics. From here, day trips to the surrounding islands of Lokrum, Lopud, and Mljet are easy and gorgeous.
⛵ Hvar, Korčula & the Dalmatian Islands
If Dubrovnik is Croatia's crown jewel, the Dalmatian islands are its hidden treasures. Each has its own personality:
- Hvar — the glamorous one. Lavender fields, vineyards, sophisticated restaurants, and a yacht-friendly old town. Great for couples who want a buzzy beach scene by day and elegant dinners by night.
- Korčula — the quiet sophisticate. A medieval walled town (smaller than Dubrovnik), wineries inland, secluded beaches, and a slower pace. Often our top island recommendation for honeymooners who want romance over party.
- Brač — home to the iconic Zlatni Rat beach, a finger of golden pebble that shifts shape with the tides.
- Vis — the most remote and authentic. A former military island, only opened to tourism in 1989, with stunning beaches and almost no chain hotels. For couples who want to feel like they've truly escaped.
🌊 Split & the Central Coast
Split is Croatia's second-largest city, and it makes a wonderful base for exploring the central Dalmatian coast. The city is built around — and partly inside — the 1,700-year-old Diocletian's Palace, a Roman emperor's retirement compound that's now full of shops, restaurants, and cafés. It's like an open-air museum you can have a glass of wine in.
Split is also Croatia's main ferry hub, making it the natural launching point for island-hopping.
🍷 Istria (The Northern Peninsula)
Often overlooked by first-time Croatia travelers, Istria is where Croatia meets Italy — geographically, culturally, and on the plate. This is Croatia's truffle country, with hilltop towns straight out of Tuscany, world-class olive oil, and some of the most exciting wine on the Adriatic.
Rovinj is the standout town — a romantic, Venetian-influenced fishing port that's increasingly being compared to Cinque Terre. Couples who love food, wine, and slow travel often choose Istria over the more popular south.
💧 Plitvice Lakes & the Interior
For something completely different, Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most photographed natural wonders in Europe — a series of 16 turquoise lakes connected by waterfalls, surrounded by ancient forest. It's a long day trip from anywhere on the coast, but unforgettable. Many of our couples build it in as a 1-night stop between Zagreb and the coast.
How Long to Stay
Croatia rewards a slightly longer trip than couples often plan. The temptation is to try to "do" Croatia in 7 days, but you'll spend a lot of that time in transit and miss the slow, soak-it-in pace that makes Croatia special.
| Trip Length | What's Possible |
|---|---|
| 7 days | Pick ONE region (Dubrovnik + 1 island OR Istria OR Split + 1 island). Don't try to do more. |
| 10 days | Sweet spot. Dubrovnik + 1–2 islands + Split, with breathing room. |
| 14 days | The dream trip. Includes Istria + Plitvice + Split + Hvar/Korčula + Dubrovnik. |
What a Croatia Honeymoon Actually Costs
One of the reasons we love recommending Croatia is the value. For comparable luxury, you'll spend significantly less than you would in Italy or Greece — though Croatia has been getting more expensive year over year, so the gap is narrowing.
Rough all-in estimates for a 10-day trip (flights, hotels, transfers, some experiences):
- Comfortable mid-range: $8,000–$12,000 per couple
- Upscale boutique: $12,000–$18,000 per couple
- Luxury (5-star, private transfers, yacht days): $18,000+ per couple
The biggest variables are airfare (which fluctuates wildly), peak vs. shoulder season pricing, and whether you incorporate any private boat days (gorgeous but pricey).
Practical Things to Know
Currency & payments
Croatia adopted the Euro in 2023. Credit cards are widely accepted, but smaller restaurants and ferry kiosks may be cash-only. Tipping is appreciated but modest — 10% on a restaurant bill is generous.
Getting around
Domestic flights connect Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik. Between coastal towns and islands, ferries (operated by Jadrolinija and Krilo) are reliable and atmospheric. Renting a car makes sense for Istria or for road trips along the coast; otherwise, transfers and ferries are usually easier.
Language
Croatian is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Learning a few words (hvala for "thank you," dobar dan for "good day") goes a long way.
Passports & entry
US citizens can stay in Croatia (and other Schengen-area EU countries) for up to 90 days without a visa. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date. Starting in late 2026, US travelers will need to apply for ETIAS authorization before entering — it's a quick online application (similar to ESTA for the EU). We'll handle all of this for our clients, but it's worth knowing about.
Croatia for Anniversary Trips Specifically
While Croatia is a fantastic honeymoon destination, we think it's even better suited for couples celebrating a meaningful anniversary — a 5th, 10th, or 25th milestone. Here's why:
- It rewards experience. First-time international travelers can find Croatia logistically tricky. Couples who've already done a European honeymoon know what to expect, and Croatia delivers the next-level version of what they loved.
- It's culturally rich. Anniversary couples often want more than just a beach. Croatia's blend of history, food, wine, and natural beauty gives you variety without feeling scattered.
- Kid-free pacing. Many of Croatia's most romantic experiences (private boat days, vineyard tours, sunset dinners in Old Towns) are inherently grown-up. Perfect for couples reclaiming time together.
- It's not "the obvious" choice. If you've already done Italy or Greece on your honeymoon, Croatia feels fresh — like you're seeing a new corner of Europe instead of revisiting an old favorite.
- A private boat day from Hvar with stops at hidden coves and the Pakleni Islands
- Sunset cocktails at Buža Bar in Dubrovnik (a cliffside bar carved into the city walls)
- A wine and truffle day in Istria's Motovun region
- A private oyster tasting in Ston (where Croatian oysters have been farmed since Roman times)
- A walk on Dubrovnik's city walls at golden hour, before the cruise crowds arrive
- Dinner at Konoba Menego on Hvar — old-school Dalmatian food in a centuries-old stone house
Where Croatia Falls Short
We always like to be honest about where a destination has limitations. A few things to know about Croatia:
- The beaches are mostly pebble or rock, not soft sand. Beautiful in their own way, but pack water shoes.
- It's not an all-inclusive culture. Croatia's hotel scene is mostly boutique properties and independent hotels. If you're someone who loves the convenience of all-inclusive Caribbean resorts, that's not really how Croatia works.
- Peak summer can be intense. July and August in Dubrovnik can mean cruise ship crowds that genuinely disrupt the experience. This is why we push our couples toward shoulder season.
- Flight times are long. Most US cities require at least one connection, and total travel time often runs 14+ hours. Worth it, but worth knowing.
Ready to Plan Your Croatia Trip?
Croatia is one of those destinations where having a planner who's actually been there matters more than usual. Knowing which Hvar hotel is worth the splurge (and which one isn't), how to time your Dubrovnik day to avoid cruise crowds, when to take the ferry vs. the catamaran, and where to find the truffle restaurant locals actually go to — that's the difference between a good Croatia trip and a great one.
At Bliss Honeymoons, we've been planning Croatia trips for nearly a decade. Whether you're considering it for your honeymoon or for a meaningful anniversary, we'd love to help you put together something unforgettable.
