El Dorado Destination Weddings: A Complete Guide to Riviera Maya's Premier Wedding Resort Family
Compare all six El Dorado wedding properties. Built by a top-producing partner agency with firsthand experience at every resort in the family.
The El Dorado family of resorts is one of the most established names in Riviera Maya destination weddings. Owned and operated by Lomas Hospitality (the López Lira family of Mexico), the portfolio includes six wedding properties across the Mexican Caribbean coast — adults-only, family-friendly, beachfront, overwater, intimate, expansive, all working under the same More Inclusive™ all-inclusive concept and the same wedding department infrastructure.
Here's why this guide exists: most couples researching destination weddings hear the El Dorado name multiple times without understanding how the properties relate to each other. Some are sister resorts that share infrastructure. Some are sections of the same physical resort. Some are completely standalone. The differences matter — and choosing the wrong property for your wedding wastes time and money.
I've personally stayed at every property in the El Dorado family many times across 20+ years of booking weddings here. As one of El Dorado's top-producing partner agencies, we negotiate directly with the resorts on every wedding we book. This guide breaks down how the properties relate, who each one is right for, and how to decide.
The El Dorado property structure (in plain English)
Most existing content treats every El Dorado-branded resort as a separate property. That's not quite right. Here's how the family actually breaks down:
Four physical properties, six wedding locations:
1. El Dorado Royale — The largest property in the family. Adults-only, AAA Four Diamond, located at Km 45 of the Cancún-Tulum highway. Has two sections: the larger "Royale" section and the more intimate "Casitas Royale" section. Both sections share the same wedding venues and beach, but offer meaningfully different guest experiences. Marketed as two distinct wedding venues, sharing one wedding department.
2. El Dorado Maroma & Palafitos — A paired property complex on world-famous Maroma Beach. El Dorado Maroma is the main adults-only beachfront resort; Palafitos is the connected overwater bungalow property (the only overwater bungalows in Mexico). The two share wedding infrastructure but offer distinctly different accommodations. Marketed as two wedding venues, sharing one wedding department.
3. El Dorado Seaside Palms & Suites — A standalone resort with two sections, located further south at Km 95 (about 90 minutes from CUN). Palms is the traditional Mexican-architecture section; Suites/Infinity is the modern swim-up section. Couples wedding here choose between sections for their stay, but the wedding happens at shared venues. Marketed as one combined wedding venue.
4. Generations Riviera Maya — The standalone family-friendly resort in the El Dorado family. Adjacent to and shares facilities with El Dorado Royale, but specifically welcomes children and multi-generational wedding parties. The only El Dorado wedding property that's not adults-only.
"The smartest way to think about it: there are four distinct destinations in the El Dorado family. Pick the destination first based on what fits your wedding (adults-only or family-friendly, beachfront or overwater, intimate or expansive, close to airport or secluded south). Then choose the specific section or sub-property within that destination."
The six El Dorado wedding properties at a glance
Here's a breakdown of each wedding property with the key facts and who each one is right for.
El Dorado Royale
The accessible-tier section — a mile of beachfront, lazy river swim-up suites, two-bed configurations
Condé Nast Top 100 Hotel. 1 mile of Punta Brava Beach, 5 swimming pools plus a lazy river, 13 dining options, and the only "Private Enclave Wedding Experience" in the El Dorado family. The only El Dorado section offering both king and double bed configurations — essential for guests who need two beds (siblings sharing, bridesmaids doubling up). Royale guests have access to Royale and Generations sections but NOT to Casitas pools and beach.
El Dorado Casitas Royale
The premium-tier section — full property access, retreat-feeling casita suites
A section of El Dorado Royale offering thatched-roof casita suites clustered around private lagoon-style pools. More intimate and tucked-away than the main Royale section. Casitas Royale guests have full access to the entire property complex (Casitas, Royale, and Generations) — the asymmetry doesn't run both ways, making this the functional upgrade tier. King bed only across all suite categories.
"On almost every Royale-area wedding we book, we mix rooms across both sections — Casitas Royale for guests who want the upgraded experience and full property access, Royale for guests who need two-bed configurations or prefer the accessible tier. Every wedding event happens at shared venues, so guest experience at the wedding itself is identical regardless of section. Using both is almost always the right move."
El Dorado Maroma
5-star adults-only on one of the world's top 10 beaches
Maroma Beach has been ranked in the top 10 globally by Travel Channel; Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice has named the resort one of the top 4 in the world. Adults-only, intimate scale (smaller than Royale or Seaside), and offers a dedicated South Asian Wedding Experience program. Maximum 2 weddings per day for protected wedding experience. Connected to Palafitos for couples wanting overwater bungalow accommodation.
Palafitos Overwater Bungalows
The only overwater bungalow wedding venue in Mexico
Mexico's only overwater bungalow property — 30 suites suspended above the Caribbean off Maroma Beach. Each bungalow features a private infinity pool, glass floor panels, ladder ocean access, and butler service. The Palafitos Sky Deck is an overwater ceremony venue you cannot replicate at any other Mexican resort. Connected to El Dorado Maroma for wedding guests staying in standard accommodations.
El Dorado Seaside Palms & Suites
Two sections, one property — the largest-scale El Dorado wedding option
Located further south on Kantenah Bay. Adults-only with two distinct sections — the traditional Mexican-architecture Palms section and the modern swim-up Infinity (Suites) section. Shares wedding venues including the standout Sky Terrace ceremony venue, the over-the-water pier, and the Venetian Palace Ballroom (the only El Dorado venue handling weddings up to 250). Naay Spa here is one of the largest in Riviera Maya.
Generations Riviera Maya
The only El Dorado property that welcomes kids — built for multi-generational weddings
All-suite, all-oceanfront, designed specifically for multi-generational wedding parties. 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom suites accommodate families traveling together. EKO Kids Club provides real programming for younger guests during wedding events. 10 wedding venues including the 300-capacity Premium Sky Deck. Adult guests have access to adjacent adults-only El Dorado properties for restaurants and bars.
Notes From My Own Stays at El Dorado Royale
El Dorado Royale was my very first all-inclusive, back in 2006, and I've returned to Royale and Casitas Royale many times since. A few things I tell couples after staying there myself:
- The Casitas are always in demand. They're comfortable and well kept, and they book up so consistently that the resort has to work hard to find time for refreshes. Reserve early if you want one.
- The grounds are a highlight. One advantage of a more established resort is the mature landscaping. It's full of flowers and trees and lovely to walk around.
- Know what the beach is like. An artificial reef offshore, installed years ago to slow hurricane erosion, is now home to marine life, so it stays. If a pristine white-sand beach is your top priority, El Dorado Maroma is the better fit. If you'll mostly be at the pool and swim-up bar, Royale is a great choice.
Which El Dorado property is right for your wedding?
Here's a quick decision guide based on what you prioritize. Most couples find one or two of these questions match their situation strongly enough to narrow the choice.
What all El Dorado properties share
Despite the property differences, every El Dorado wedding property operates under the same Lomas Hospitality framework. This means certain things are consistent across all of them:
The More Inclusive™ all-inclusive concept
All El Dorado properties operate under Lomas Hospitality's More Inclusive™ guest experience. This goes beyond standard all-inclusive: round-trip airport transfers are included, all premium beverages are included, 24-hour room service is standard, daily-replenished in-suite minibars are included, and properties offer complimentary catamaran and reef snorkel experiences at Maroma Beach.
The same wedding department infrastructure
El Dorado weddings across all properties are coordinated by the Lomas Hospitality wedding team. The wedding coordinators have decades of combined experience and know every venue, every vendor, and every operational consideration. Wedding packages, included services, and pricing logic are standardized across the family — meaning the experience of working with the wedding department is consistent regardless of which property you choose.
LGBTQ+ welcoming
All El Dorado properties welcome same-sex weddings with identical wedding packages. Quintana Roo (the Mexican state) legalized same-sex marriage in 2012, and the resorts have actively supported same-sex destination weddings for years.
Group benefits scale with room block
Every El Dorado property offers group benefits that scale with the number of rooms in your wedding block. Larger groups unlock decor credits, complimentary wedding packages, room upgrades for the couple, cash-back benefits, and complimentary cocktail hours. The specific thresholds vary by property and by package, but the underlying logic is consistent: more guests = more leverage = more value. We negotiate these directly with the resort on every wedding.
Tiered wedding package structure
All El Dorado properties offer wedding packages tiered from basic ceremony-only (typically starting around $1,500) through premium full-celebration packages (typically up to $13,500+). The South Asian Wedding Experience packages are available at participating properties for approximately $16,799 base. Use our destination wedding cost calculator for a personalized estimate.
"After 20 years booking weddings at every El Dorado property, here's the thing I tell every couple: the wedding department quality is the same. The food quality is the same. The service standard is the same. What's different is the SETTING and SCALE. Pick the property that matches the wedding you're picturing — not the one with the best marketing photos."
Why we recommend the El Dorado family
There are many Riviera Maya wedding resorts. After 20+ years in this business, here's why we keep returning our couples to the El Dorado properties more often than any other family:
Owner consistency. The López Lira family has owned these properties since they were originally built. They took back direct management from a previous management company in 2023, and the operation has stabilized under that direct ownership. For an industry where resorts frequently change hands, get rebranded, or get sold off, ownership consistency means the wedding program you book today will deliver the same experience 12-18 months from now.
Wedding department depth. The Lomas Travel wedding team has decades of combined experience. They've coordinated thousands of weddings. They know every venue, every weather pattern, every vendor relationship. That experience translates directly to fewer surprises on your wedding day.
Variety within one trusted family. Six wedding properties across four physical locations means you can match a property to your specific wedding — without leaving the trusted operational quality of one experienced wedding company. Whether you want overwater, family-friendly, large-scale, or intimate, there's an El Dorado property that fits.
Our relationship. As one of El Dorado's top-producing partner agencies, we negotiate directly with the resort sales team on every wedding. That's a meaningful advantage that translates into better group benefits, smoother problem resolution, and better date availability for our couples.
