Greece Honeymoon Guide: Islands, Hotels & Itinerary
Greece Honeymoon Guide: Islands, Hotels, Timing & Everything You Need to Know
Greece is one of those destinations that earns its reputation completely. The caldera views in Santorini really are as dramatic as the photos suggest. The whitewashed lanes of Mykonos Town really are as beautiful as the Instagram posts. The food, the sunsets, the warmth of the people — Greece delivers on every promise it makes to honeymooners.
Our team at Bliss Honeymoons has planned dozens of Greece honeymoons over the years, including Kelly's own firsthand experience across the islands. This guide is written from that experience — not from a travel brochure. We'll tell you the things that actually matter: which island is right for your style, which hotels are worth the splurge, and the mistakes that are very easy to avoid with the right guidance.
Why Greece for a Honeymoon
Greece offers something genuinely rare in honeymoon travel: a destination that is simultaneously iconic and intimate. Unlike the all-inclusive Caribbean resort experience — where the resort is the destination — Greece invites you to explore. Every day brings something different. A new village. A new view. A boat trip to a hidden cove. A long lunch that turns into a three-hour conversation over Assyrtiko wine.
The practical reasons are strong too. Greece has excellent air connections from the US, a wide range of accommodation from boutique cave suites to luxury cliff-top villas, genuinely extraordinary food, and a culture that is warm and welcoming toward couples celebrating love — all couples.
"Greece legalized same-sex marriage in 2024 and is one of our top recommendations for LGBTQ+ honeymooners, particularly Santorini, Mykonos, and Athens. All three are genuinely welcoming and celebratory of all couples."
Santorini vs. Mykonos — The Honest Comparison
This is the question every Greece honeymooner asks. Here's our genuine answer after planning dozens of Greece trips for couples.
Santorini is the more iconic, dramatic, and romantic of the two islands — and for most honeymooners, it's the right choice. The caldera is genuinely unlike anything else in Greece: a flooded volcanic crater rimmed with cliffside villages in brilliant white, and one of the most spectacular views in the world looking out over the deep blue Aegean.
The villages of Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani are where the best cliffside cave suite hotels are found. Sunsets here are legendary — though the crowds in Oia at sunset can be significant in peak season, so having a hotel with a caldera-view terrace means you can watch from complete privacy.
Santorini's nightlife is centred on sunset watching and wine. The island produces exceptional Assyrtiko white wine from vineyards growing in volcanic soil, and the wineries are a genuinely memorable experience. The atmosphere winds down early — this is a couples' island, not a party island.
Mykonos has a completely different character. It's glamorous, social, and significantly more lively than Santorini. The beaches — Psarou, Ornos, Elia — are genuinely among the best in Greece, with golden sand, crystal-clear water, and well-organized beach clubs. Mykonos Town is beautiful to wander, full of boutique shopping, excellent restaurants, and sunset cocktail spots at Little Venice.
For couples who want beach time, nightlife, and a social atmosphere, Mykonos is actually the more versatile island. But it is more expensive overall, and the party scene in high season can be intense.
"If your ideal honeymoon involves a cliffside cave suite with a private infinity pool overlooking the caldera and candlelit dinners as the sun sets over the volcano — Santorini is one of the best places on earth for it. If you want great beaches and a livelier atmosphere, choose Mykonos. If you have ten days, do both."
Beyond Santorini & Mykonos
The two famous islands are not the only options — and for couples who have already done Santorini and Mykonos, or who want something less crowded, the wider Greek islands offer extraordinary alternatives.
Paros
The perfect middle ground — beautiful Cycladic architecture, excellent beaches, a charming old town, and a fraction of the crowds of Santorini or Mykonos. Increasingly popular with couples who want the Greek island aesthetic without the tourist density. Paros pairs beautifully with either Santorini or Mykonos as a multi-island itinerary.
Milos
One of the most dramatically beautiful islands in Greece — volcanic, remote, and home to Sarakiniko Beach, a surreal lunar landscape of white volcanic rock that looks nothing like any other beach in the world. Fewer tourists, more authenticity, and genuinely spectacular scenery. A strong pick for adventurous couples.
Crete
Greece's largest island — and arguably its most diverse. Ancient Minoan ruins, gorge hikes, spectacular beaches, mountain villages, and some of the best food in Greece. Crete is best for couples who want to explore and experience Greece beyond the whitewashed Cycladic aesthetic.
Athens — Don't Skip It
Almost every Greece honeymoon flies into Athens, and many couples treat it only as a transit hub. This is a mistake. Two to three nights in Athens gives you the Acropolis, the extraordinary Acropolis Museum, some of the best restaurants in Greece, and a completely different side of the country. We recommend building Athens into every Greece itinerary.
Best Hotels for Honeymooners in Greece
Santorini
Consistently rated among the best hotels in Greece and one of the most romantic hotels in Europe. Set directly on the caldera cliff in Oia with uninterrupted views across the volcano and the Aegean. Private infinity pools, cave suite architecture, exceptional spa, and a level of service that genuinely makes every guest feel like the only couple on the island. Book as early as possible — this is one of the most in-demand hotels in Greece.
Another Oia classic — carved into the cliffside with dramatic caldera views, private pool suites, and the kind of intimate, attentive service that defines the best of Greek hospitality. One of the most photographed hotels in Santorini and fully deserving of its reputation.
Imerovigli sits higher than Oia with arguably the best views on the island — and fewer tourists. Rocabella offers caldera-view suites with private pools in a quieter, more intimate setting than the most famous Oia properties. A beautiful choice for couples who want the Santorini experience with a little more breathing room.
Mykonos
A boutique adults-only property with private pool suites, stunning sea views, and an atmosphere that feels genuinely exclusive without being stuffy. Exceptional cuisine, attentive service, and one of the best pools on the island. Our top hotel recommendation in Mykonos for honeymooners.
A beautifully designed boutique property on Ornos Bay with private pools, panoramic sea views, and easy access to Mykonos Town and the best beaches. A genuine romantic hideaway in a location that makes exploring the island effortless.
When to Go — Greece Honeymoon Timing
Timing matters significantly in Greece. The islands are seasonal destinations — most hotels close from November through March, ferry schedules are drastically reduced in winter, and the experience of the islands is almost entirely defined by the time of year.
| Time of Year | Weather | Crowds & Cost | Our Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late May – JuneSweet Spot | Warm, sunny, sea warming up. Comfortable temperatures (25–28°C). | Shoulder season — noticeably fewer crowds than July/August. Better prices. | Our top recommendation for honeymooners. Best balance of everything. |
| July – August | Hot (30–35°C+). Strong Meltemi winds in August can make ferries choppy and cause delays. | Peak season. Maximum crowds, maximum prices. Oia at sunset is a scrum. | Still wonderful — but book far in advance and choose a hotel with private caldera views. |
| SeptemberSweet Spot | Warm sea, slightly cooler air. Still excellent swimming weather. | Crowds thin out noticeably from mid-September. Prices begin to drop. | Arguably the best month overall. Our second top recommendation. |
| OctoberGood | Mild, some rain possible. Still pleasant for exploring and dining. | Low season beginning. Most businesses still open through October. | Cozy and atmospheric — good for couples who prefer sightseeing to beach days. |
| April – Early MayGood | Mild but cool. Sea too cold for most swimmers. Some businesses still closed. | Low crowds, lower prices. Greek Easter (April 12, 2026) brings domestic travelers. | Fine for Athens and exploring — less ideal for island beach days. |
"The Feast of the Assumption is Greece's biggest national holiday. Ferries sell out weeks in advance and the islands are packed with Greek families. If your dates include August 15th, book all ferry tickets and accommodations as early as possible."
A Sample 10-Day Greece Honeymoon Itinerary
This is our most popular Greece honeymoon structure — Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. It flows naturally, ends on the most romantic note, and gives you the best of all three destinations.
Arrive into Athens (ATH) and settle into your hotel near the Acropolis. Day one is for recovering from the flight and wandering the Plaka neighbourhood. Day two: the Acropolis and the extraordinary Acropolis Museum in the morning, followed by lunch in the shade, an afternoon at your hotel, and dinner at a rooftop restaurant with Acropolis views — one of the most memorable meals you'll have in Greece.
Ferry or short flight from Athens to Mykonos. Three nights gives you time to find your rhythm — a long beach day at Psarou or Ornos, an afternoon wandering Mykonos Town and Little Venice, sunset cocktails, and dinner at one of the island's excellent restaurants. The ferry crossing itself is part of the experience — take the high-speed boat and enjoy the Aegean from the deck.
Ferry from Mykonos to Santorini (approx. 2 hours on the high-speed catamaran). Four nights in Santorini lets you do it properly — a sunset cruise around the caldera, a visit to the ancient ruins of Akrotiri, a winery tour and tasting, a walk along the caldera path from Fira to Oia, and plenty of time simply sitting on your private terrace watching the light change over the volcano. End each evening with dinner somewhere with caldera views.
Fly from Santorini (JTR) directly to the US if available, or take the short flight back to Athens (45 minutes) for an international connection. Some couples choose one final night in Athens before the long journey home — a nice way to decompress before re-entering normal life.
Practical Tips & What to Know Before You Go
- Book hotels early — especially caldera-view rooms in Santorini. The best cave suites at Canaves Oia and Katikies sell out 6–12 months in advance for peak season. If Santorini is your priority, start there.
- Pre-book ferry tickets. The Mykonos–Santorini ferry fills up, especially in July and August. Book as soon as your hotel dates are confirmed through a reliable ferry booking service.
- The Meltemi winds matter. Strong northern winds blow through the Aegean from mid-June through August, peaking in July/August. They keep temperatures bearable but make the sea choppy. If you're prone to seasickness, take the large Blue Star Ferries rather than the smaller high-speed catamarans during this period.
- Santorini has almost no beaches worth swimming from. The famous beaches (Red Beach, Perissa, Kamari) are black volcanic sand and often very crowded. If long beach days are important to you, Mykonos is significantly better for this.
- Hire a car or ATV in Santorini. The island is small but spread out. A rental lets you reach the wineries, Akrotiri, and the quieter villages on your own schedule. Traffic in Oia and Fira can be significant — go early.
- No visa required for US citizens. Greece is part of the Schengen Area — US citizens can visit for up to 90 days without a visa.
- Tipping culture. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory in Greece. Rounding up the bill or leaving 10% at restaurants is standard and warmly received.
- Work with a specialist. The difference between a Greece honeymoon that's good and one that's extraordinary often comes down to hotel selection, room category, and timing. The properties we recommend are ones our team knows personally — and we negotiate honeymoon perks that aren't available booking independently.
