Honeymoon Planning Timeline: 12-Month Checklist | Bliss
The Complete Honeymoon Planning Timeline: What to Do, and When to Do It
The most common question we hear from newly engaged couples isn't "where should we go?" — it's "when do we need to start planning?" The answer, especially for popular destinations and peak travel dates, is almost always: sooner than you think.
After 20+ years of planning honeymoons for hundreds of couples, we've seen every planning scenario — the couple who started 18 months out and had every detail perfectly in place, and the couple who called us 6 weeks before their wedding wondering why their dream resort was sold out. This guide is built from that experience. Follow it and you'll never be the second couple.
"Don't panic — we can work with almost any timeline. Call us first and we'll tell you honestly what's still possible. Some of our most memorable honeymoons have been planned in 6 weeks."
Your Month-by-Month Honeymoon Planning Timeline
- Contact your honeymoon travel agent. This is the single most important step on this list. The earlier we're involved, the more options we have and the better your trip will be. An initial conversation costs nothing and takes 30 minutes.
- Have a broad conversation about destination. Caribbean? Europe? Asia? Adventurous or purely relaxing? Budget range? You don't need answers — just a starting point.
- Book immediately if you have a specific resort in mind. Overwater villas in Bora Bora, cave suites in Santorini, and private island resorts anywhere in the world sell out 12+ months in advance for peak dates. If this is your dream, act now.
- Check your passports. Both partners need passports valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. If either is expired or close to expiring, renew now — passport processing can take 10–16 weeks without expedited service.
- Narrow down your destination. By now you should have a shortlist of two or three options. Your travel agent can help you make the final call based on your travel style, budget, and dates.
- Set your budget. Be honest about the total number — accommodation, flights, transfers, food, and activities. Knowing this upfront saves time and sets realistic expectations from the start.
- Choose your resort and book it. For the Caribbean, Mexico, and most popular destinations, 9 months is a comfortable booking window. For French Polynesia, Maldives, Santorini, and private island resorts, 12+ months is safer.
- Book flights once the resort is confirmed. Flight prices are volatile — booking 6–9 months out typically offers a good balance of availability and price. Your travel agent can advise on the best booking windows for your specific route.
- Consider travel insurance. We strongly recommend cancel-for-any-reason coverage, purchased within 14–21 days of your initial trip deposit to ensure maximum coverage. Ask us about this — the right policy makes a significant difference.
- Confirm room category and any upgrades. Room categories matter enormously — especially at Caribbean and Maldivian resorts where the difference between an ocean-view room and an overwater villa is everything. Review your options with your agent.
- Book airport transfers. Private transfers from the airport to your resort are well worth the cost on your honeymoon — especially after a long international flight. Book in advance to ensure availability.
- Book any must-do excursions or experiences. Sunrise Akrotiri tours in Santorini. Private sunset cruises. Specific restaurants. Couples spa treatments. The best experiences at popular resorts and destinations fill up. Book early.
- For destination weddings — send save the dates and open your room block. Your guests need maximum time to plan their travel. Communicate early and often.
- Research visa requirements. Most popular honeymoon destinations don't require US citizen visas, but some (India, Australia, Sri Lanka) require electronic travel authorizations. Confirm requirements for your destination early.
- Check vaccination requirements. Some destinations have specific requirements — yellow fever for parts of Africa and South America, for example. Your doctor and the CDC travel health website are the most reliable sources.
- Set up a honeymoon registry. Many couples prefer a honeymoon fund over a traditional registry — guests contribute to specific experiences like a private dinner, a sunset cruise, or a spa treatment. Ask us about the best honeymoon registry options.
- Notify the resort of your honeymoon. Most resorts offer complimentary honeymoon amenities — room upgrades (subject to availability), champagne on arrival, flowers, a romantic dinner — that require advance notification. We handle this for every couple we book.
- Book any special anniversary dinners or experiences. If you want a private beach dinner, a cooking class, or a specific table at a restaurant that requires advance reservations — now is the time.
- Begin any required medical appointments. If you need vaccinations for your destination, many require a course of injections over several weeks. Start this process 4–6 months before travel.
- Confirm all bookings and review your itinerary. Your travel agent should send you a full confirmation of everything — resort, flights, transfers, experiences — reviewed together to make sure nothing is missing.
- Make a packing list and start shopping for anything you need. Don't leave this to the night before the wedding — that way lies chaos. A good packing list, started early, means nothing gets forgotten.
- Notify your bank and credit cards. Alert your bank and credit card companies to your travel dates and destinations. Being locked out of your card abroad is a common and easily preventable problem.
- Arrange currency or international banking. For some destinations, having local currency on arrival is important. For others, a no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card handles everything. Ask us what's standard for your destination.
- Confirm all bookings one final time. Your travel agent will do a final review — resort reservation, flight details, transfer timing, any special requests. Everything confirmed in writing.
- Download offline maps and important documents. Save PDFs of your reservation confirmations, travel insurance policy, and passport copies to your phone. Keep paper copies in a separate bag.
- Set up out-of-office messages. Decide in advance how much you'll check email and communicate that boundary clearly to colleagues and family before you leave.
- Confirm your transfer is booked and the driver has your flight details. Especially important if your flight time has changed since original booking.
- Pack your carry-on with the essentials. Passport, travel documents, medications, a change of clothes, chargers, and anything you absolutely cannot do without if your checked luggage is delayed.
- Check in online 24 hours before departure. Select seats if you haven't already — being separated on a long international flight is not the honeymoon beginning you want.
- Save your travel agent's contact number. Something unexpected always has the potential to happen. Having a real person you can call — who knows your reservation and can actually fix things — is priceless.
- Let it go. The wedding is done. Whatever didn't get finished, didn't happen, or didn't go perfectly — let it go. You're about to start your honeymoon. That's what matters now.
A Note on Planning Timelines by Destination
Not every destination requires the same lead time. Here's our general guidance:
- French Polynesia (Bora Bora, Tahiti, Moorea): Book 12+ months out for peak season (July–August, December). Overwater bungalows at top resorts like the St. Regis or Four Seasons sell out extremely early.
- Maldives: 9–12 months for peak season. Resort selection matters enormously here — there are hundreds of properties and the difference between them is significant.
- Santorini, Greece: 9–12 months for caldera-view cave suites at Canaves Oia, Katikies, and similar top-tier properties. The best rooms go first.
- Caribbean all-inclusive (Sandals, Secrets, Excellence): 6–9 months is generally comfortable. Butler suite categories and overwater villas book faster — treat those as 9–12 months.
- Mexico all-inclusive: 6–9 months for most properties. December 26–January 2 and spring break weeks book up faster — treat those as 9–12 months.
- Italy, Portugal, Spain: 6–9 months for summer travel. Shoulder season (May, September, October) allows more flexibility.
- Private island resorts anywhere: 12+ months. Full stop. These properties have very few rooms and very loyal repeat guests. Don't wait.
"The single most common thing we hear from couples who come to us late is 'I didn't realize how far out we needed to book.' The second most common is 'thank goodness we found you in time.' Call us early."
What Happens When You Work With Bliss
When you hire us to plan your honeymoon, here's what actually happens — beyond just "booking a resort."
- A dedicated specialist handles everything. One person. Not a call center. Not a different agent every time you call. The same person from your first consultation through your return home.
- We pre-notify the resort. Every resort we book for a honeymoon receives advance notification with your names, arrival date, and any special requests. Champagne on arrival, turndown with rose petals, a room upgrade request — all handled before you land.
- We look for the best value for your budget. Our team knows the promotions, seasonal pricing, and booking strategies that help you get the most out of your honeymoon investment — and we share that knowledge with every couple we work with.
- We advocate for you if something goes wrong. Airline delays. Wrong room. Resort issue. Having a real person who knows your reservation and has relationships with the resort makes an enormous difference in how quickly and completely problems get resolved.
