Jamaica is the original Caribbean honeymoon destination — and after more than 60 years of welcoming newlyweds, it shows no signs of slowing down. It's the home of Sandals Resorts, the birthplace of all-inclusive romance travel, and one of the most culturally vibrant islands in the entire Caribbean. Where St. Lucia is about scenery and intimacy, Jamaica is about energy, character, and the kind of warmth that makes you feel genuinely welcomed rather than just serviced.

The island has something for every couple: Seven Mile Beach in Negril for couples who want the quintessential Caribbean beach experience; Montego Bay for those who want the most resort variety and easiest airport access; Ocho Rios for adventure-seekers who want waterfalls, excursions, and cultural exploration. And for all-inclusive luxury, Jamaica remains Sandals' home — with more properties here than anywhere else in the Caribbean.

Why Jamaica for Your Honeymoon

Jamaica has been a top honeymoon destination for decades — and the reasons are easy to understand. The island has genuine personality: vibrant music, extraordinary food, warm and welcoming people, and a culture that runs deep and feels authentic rather than manufactured for tourists. A Jamaica honeymoon is never generic.

The all-inclusive infrastructure is unmatched. Jamaica is home to more top-tier adults-only all-inclusive resorts than almost any other Caribbean island — Sandals, Couples Resorts, Hyatt Zilara, and others. For couples who want to arrive and not think about anything for a week, Jamaica delivers.

The variety is exceptional. Three distinct resort areas — Negril, Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios — each with its own personality, means there's a right fit for every couple. The answer to "where in Jamaica?" is the most important planning question, and we'll answer it below.

The value proposition is strong. Relative to other premium Caribbean destinations like St. Lucia or Barbados, Jamaica offers more resort options across a wider range of price points — making luxury accessible for more couples.

Negril vs. Montego Bay vs. Ocho Rios

This is the question we get asked most often about Jamaica — and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you want from your honeymoon. Here's our honest breakdown:

Most Convenient
Montego Bay

Right next to the airport — you can be at your resort within 20–30 minutes of landing. Lively social atmosphere, excellent resort variety, good nightlife and dining options. The Hip Strip and Rose Hall Great House are close by. Less spectacular beaches than Negril but maximum convenience.

Best for: Shorter stays (4 nights or less), couples who want variety and social atmosphere, easy excursion access.
Best for Adventure
Ocho Rios

Home to Dunn's River Falls, Mystic Mountain, and some of Jamaica's best adventure excursions. About 90 minutes from Montego Bay airport — a scenic drive but a factor for short trips. Large resort options with lots of amenities. More active, exploration-focused feel.

Best for: Adventure couples, waterfall and nature lovers, couples who want to explore beyond the resort.
Factor Negril Montego Bay Ocho Rios

Best Resorts for Honeymooners in Jamaica

Best in Negril

Couples Swept Away
Negril · Seven Mile Beach · Adults-Only · All-Inclusive

The Couples Resorts brand is a Negril institution — and Swept Away is consistently praised for its exceptional food, beautiful beach, and the laid-back, genuinely romantic atmosphere that Negril is famous for. Six restaurants, a world-class sports complex, and a complimentary sunset catamaran cruise are all included. A strong alternative to Sandals for couples who want Negril's beach without the Sandals brand specifically.

Seven Mile Beach Sunset catamaran included Exceptional food reputation World-class sports complex

Best in Montego Bay

Hyatt Zilara Montego Bay
Montego Bay · Adults-Only · All-Inclusive

An excellent non-Sandals option in Montego Bay — an upscale, adults-only all-inclusive with a beautiful beachfront location, exceptional food and beverage program, and a World of Hyatt points-earning benefit that Sandals doesn't offer. Consistently praised for its service and cuisine. A strong choice for couples who are Hyatt loyalists or who want to earn points on their honeymoon.

Best in Ocho Rios

Sandals Royal Plantation
Ocho Rios · Adults-Only · All-Inclusive · All-Butler

The most intimate and exclusive property in the entire Sandals portfolio — just 74 suites, every single one with butler service, perched on a clifftop above two private beaches in Ocho Rios. The butler-to-guest ratio is the highest of any Sandals property. If you want the most attentive, personalized, boutique all-inclusive experience in Jamaica, this is it — full stop.

Things to Do as a Couple in Jamaica

  • Climb Dunn's River Falls — The most famous attraction in Jamaica. A guided climb up a 600-foot cascading waterfall, hand-in-hand with fellow climbers in a human chain — genuinely fun and exhilarating. Located right next to Sandals Dunn's River in Ocho Rios.
  • Sunset at Rick's Café, Negril — The legendary Negril cliff bar where locals and visitors gather every evening to watch the sunset, watch daring cliff divers, and enjoy drinks with one of the best views in Jamaica. Even if you're not in Negril, it's worth the trip.
  • Luminous Lagoon night tour — Near Montego Bay, this bioluminescent lagoon glows brilliant blue-green when disturbed at night. Swimming in a glowing lagoon together is one of the most magical experiences Jamaica offers. Book a guided night tour.
  • Catamaran cruise — A classic Jamaica experience: sailing along the coast with an open bar, stopping for snorkeling at a reef, and returning for a beautiful sunset. Available from all resort areas.
  • Blue Mountains coffee tour — Jamaica produces some of the most prized coffee in the world. A guided tour through the Blue Mountains, with a coffee tasting at the summit, is a beautiful half-day adventure for couples who love food and scenery.
  • River rafting on the Martha Brae — A romantic, gentle bamboo raft ride down the Martha Brae River, punted by a local guide. One of Jamaica's most romantic excursions.
  • Explore Negril's famous sunsets — Even from your resort, Negril's sunsets over the Caribbean are extraordinary. The west-facing position of Seven Mile Beach means every evening ends with a show.
  • Couples spa day — Jamaica's resort spas are excellent — particularly at Sandals properties and the boutique resorts in the Ocho Rios area. A full-day couples treatment is worth building into your itinerary.
  • Sample Jamaican jerk — No Jamaica honeymoon is complete without eating jerk chicken from a roadside shack or local restaurant. The best jerk in the world is here — don't limit yourself to resort dining every night.

Best Time to Visit Jamaica

December through April is peak season and the driest, sunniest period. Rates are highest and resorts most booked — plan and book well in advance for this window.

November and May through June are our recommended shoulder season months — significantly better value, still excellent weather, and fewer crowds. Jamaica's tropical showers during this period tend to be brief and don't typically disrupt resort days.

July through October is hurricane season. October is the highest-risk month. Travel insurance with cancel-for-any-reason coverage is essential. That said, Jamaica's hurricane risk is real but manageable — Negril in particular sits on the western tip of the island and is less exposed than some areas.

Year-round warmth: Jamaica averages 79°F year-round with very little temperature variation — even the "coolest" months in January and February rarely feel cool. The weather consistency is one of Jamaica's practical advantages over more temperate destinations.

Planning Tips for a Jamaica Honeymoon

Book the right airport transfer. Almost all US flights land at Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay. If you're staying in Negril or Ocho Rios, your resort will provide or help arrange a transfer — but factor in the 75–90 minute drive when planning arrival day. We always recommend a private transfer rather than shared shuttle for a honeymoon couple.

Do not pack camouflage. This sounds unusual but it matters: wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in Jamaica. Leave anything camouflage-print at home.

Sandals in 2026 — know what's open. Three Jamaica Sandals properties are closed through late 2026 for major renovation. Check our 2026 Sandals update guide before booking to make sure your preferred property is operating.

Don't skip the excursions. Jamaica rewards exploration. Couples who stay on the resort for their entire trip consistently report missing the best the island has to offer. We recommend budgeting for at least two excursions — one adventure (Dunn's River, Blue Mountains, river rafting) and one romance-focused (sunset cruise, Luminous Lagoon).
