Jamaica destination wedding

Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are the two most popular Caribbean destination wedding locations for American couples — and for good reason. Both are easy to get to, both have an enormous selection of all-inclusive wedding resorts, and both offer the turquoise water and white sand beach setting that most couples are picturing when they say "Caribbean wedding."

But they are not the same destination, and they are not right for the same couple. After planning hundreds of Caribbean destination weddings, here is our honest, specific breakdown of how they compare — so you can make the right decision for your guests, your budget, and the experience you want.

The Short Version
🇯🇲 Choose Jamaica If...
  • You want Sandals resorts and overwater chapels
  • Your group is 20–60 guests
  • Island personality and culture matter to you
  • You want a legal Caribbean ceremony
  • You love the energy and warmth of Jamaica
🇩🇴 Choose DR If...
  • You have 60–150+ guests
  • Budget is a top priority for you and your guests
  • You want the widest possible resort selection
  • You prefer a symbolic ceremony
  • Maximum guest attendance is the goal

The Detailed Comparison

🇯🇲 Jamaica 🇩🇴 Dominican Republic
Best Guest Count 20–60 guests. Most Jamaica resorts are best suited to intimate to mid-sized groups. 40–150+ guests. The DR's mega-resorts are purpose-built for large groups.
Flight Access Direct flights from most major US East Coast cities. 3–4 hours. MBJ is the main airport. Slight edge for East Coast guests Direct flights from more US cities — including many Midwest and South hubs — to PUJ (Punta Cana). Often the cheapest Caribbean flights available. Edge for affordability + access
Per-Person Guest Cost $250–$500+/night for guests at top Sandals/Couples properties. Jamaica runs higher per-room than the DR. $150–$350/night at excellent all-inclusive properties. The DR is consistently the most affordable quality option in the Caribbean. Clear winner on guest cost
Resort Selection Smaller pool — but includes Sandals and Couples, which are best-in-class for wedding group management. Quality over quantity. Enormous selection — 50+ all-inclusive wedding resorts in Punta Cana alone. Something for every budget and style. More options
Legal Marriage 24-hour residency. No blood test. Resort coordinator handles paperwork. One of the easiest legal Caribbean ceremonies available. Clear winner More complex requirements. Most couples choose a symbolic ceremony in the DR and legalize at home.
Ceremony Venues Overwater chapels (Sandals South Coast), private island ceremonies (Sandals Caribbean Cay), beach and garden venues. Some of the most distinctive venues in the Caribbean. Primarily beach and garden ceremonies. Beautiful but more conventional. Fewer truly distinctive venue options.
Island Personality Warm, vibrant, culturally rich. Jamaica has a genuine soul — the music, food, and people add a layer to the experience that a resort-only destination can't replicate. Stronger cultural experience The DR's resort areas (especially Punta Cana) are largely self-contained. Less reason to venture off-property — which some guests prefer.
Transfer Times MBJ to Montego Bay/Negril resorts: 20–45 min. MBJ to South Coast: 90 min. Factor this in for guests. PUJ airport is extremely close to Punta Cana resorts — most transfers are 20–30 minutes. Easier airport logistics
Excursions & Activities Dunn's River Falls, Blue Mountains, catamaran cruises, Rick's Cafe — excellent off-property options for wedding week activities. Better excursion variety Saona Island day trip is spectacular. Otherwise more limited than Jamaica for off-property experiences.
Sandals Available? Yes — 4 properties. We are Certified Sandals Specialists. Jamaica only No Sandals in the DR.

The Guest Count Question

This is the single most important factor in the Jamaica vs. DR decision — and it's one that surprises a lot of couples. Guest count drives almost everything else.

If you're planning for 20–50 guests, Jamaica is a genuinely excellent choice. The Sandals and Couples properties handle intimate and mid-sized groups beautifully. The per-person cost is higher, but the experience — the venues, the service, the overall polish — is exceptional.

If you're expecting 60, 80, or 100+ guests, the Dominican Republic becomes a much more compelling option. The mega-resorts in Punta Cana — Excellence, Dreams, Zoëtry, Barceló — are built for large groups. The room blocks are easier to manage, the per-person costs are lower (which means more guests can actually afford to come), and the wedding infrastructure for big groups is unmatched in the Caribbean.

From Our Specialists

"We've seen couples fall in love with Jamaica and then invite 90 guests and wonder why the logistics felt hard. And we've seen couples who wanted the DR and ended up with 30 guests who would have loved the intimacy of a Jamaica property. The destination should match the guest count — and the guest count is usually clearer than couples think."

The Legal Marriage Question

If getting legally married at your destination matters to you, Jamaica wins this comparison decisively. The 24-hour residency requirement means you simply arrive the day before your ceremony. No blood test. Your resort coordinator handles the license application. Your certificate is legally recognized in the United States.

The Dominican Republic has more complex requirements — multiple certified documents, Spanish translations, and a process that most couples find more trouble than it's worth. The majority of DR destination weddings are symbolic ceremonies, with couples legalizing their marriage at home either before or after the trip.

Both options are completely valid. Many couples actually prefer the symbolic route — less paperwork, more flexibility on timing, and the ceremony experience is identical either way. But if a legal Caribbean ceremony is important to you, Jamaica is the clear choice.

"The best destination wedding is the one that fits your guests. Choose the island second. Choose the experience you want for the people you love first."
