Palafitos Overwater Wedding Guide
Palafitos Wedding Guide: Mexico's Only Overwater Bungalow Wedding Experience
Palafitos Overwater Bungalows is the only resort in Mexico with true overwater accommodations. Thirty private bungalows suspended above the turquoise Caribbean Sea, just off Maroma Beach — which Travel Channel consistently ranks among the top 10 beaches in the world. For couples who've dreamed of an overwater wedding but didn't want a 24-hour flight to the Maldives or Bora Bora, this is the answer. And it's about 4 hours from most US cities.
Here's the part that matters most: I've personally stayed at all of the El Dorado properties many times, including Palafitos. The glass floor panels, the private infinity pool on each bungalow's deck, the ladder that drops directly into the Caribbean from your private terrace — these aren't marketing photos that disappoint in person. They genuinely deliver the experience the brochures promise.
As one of El Dorado's top-producing partner agencies, we book Palafitos weddings often. This guide walks through what couples actually need to know — the venues, the experience, what it costs, and the critical detail about guest accommodations that most other agencies don't explain clearly.
What Palafitos actually is (and how the property works)
Palafitos isn't a standalone resort. It's a cluster of 30 overwater bungalows connected via a long pier to El Dorado Maroma, the adults-only beachfront resort it sits adjacent to. The bungalows are luxury accommodations — 600 to 800+ square feet each, with private infinity pools, glass floor panels showing the marine life below, outdoor showers, indoor hot tubs, and 24-hour butler service.
Both Palafitos and El Dorado Maroma are part of Lomas Hospitality's portfolio (along with El Dorado Royale, El Dorado Casitas Royale, and Generations Riviera Maya), and they operate under the same More Inclusive™ all-inclusive concept. Guests of Palafitos have full access to El Dorado Maroma's facilities — the additional pools, the beachfront, the four à la carte restaurants — plus the exclusive overwater amenities reserved for Palafitos guests: the Over the Water Grill & Wine Bar (with glass-floor private dining rooms), the overwater Naay Spa, and the Sky Deck.
"Your wedding can be at Palafitos even if not all your guests stay in the overwater bungalows. There are only 30 bungalows total — usually not enough for a full wedding party. Most couples book the Palafitos bungalow for themselves and have guests stay at El Dorado Maroma next door. They still attend the Palafitos wedding ceremony and join you in the overwater venues for events."
The wedding venues — including the only overwater ceremony in Mexico
Because Palafitos and El Dorado Maroma share wedding infrastructure, couples have access to eight wedding venues across the combined property. But the showstopper — and the reason couples specifically choose Palafitos over any other resort — is the Sky Deck.
Reception venues at Palafitos and El Dorado Maroma include the overwater Lima Limon space, beachfront reception areas, and indoor ballroom options for larger groups. Most of our Palafitos couples do the ceremony on the Sky Deck and the reception either beachfront or in one of the overwater spaces.
What makes a Palafitos wedding genuinely different
Photography you literally cannot get anywhere else in Mexico
This is the practical case for Palafitos. Every other Mexico destination wedding produces beautiful photos — beach ceremonies, garden settings, cenote shoots. But overwater ceremony photography, with the bungalow village stretching out into turquoise water behind you? That doesn't exist anywhere else in the country. For couples who care deeply about wedding photography (which is most of them), Palafitos is genuinely one-of-one.
The honeymoon is built into the wedding trip
The overwater bungalow experience is bucket-list-level for most couples. By choosing Palafitos for the wedding, you're effectively combining the destination wedding and a Bora Bora-tier honeymoon into the same trip. The bungalow you spend your wedding night in is the same one you'd choose for a standalone honeymoon at any other overwater destination in the world — except you don't fly 18+ hours to get there.
Small wedding intimacy with full luxury infrastructure
Palafitos is naturally suited to smaller weddings (20-60 guests is the sweet spot) because of the bungalow count and intimate scale. But because it shares infrastructure with El Dorado Maroma, you get the full wedding department, the full restaurant variety, and the full Lomas wedding expertise. Most "intimate boutique" properties can't match that depth of service.
Genuine LGBTQ+ inclusivity
El Dorado Maroma's Palafitos explicitly welcomes weddings for all couples regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, with wedding packages structured identically. This matters in Mexico, where Quintana Roo legalized same-sex marriage in 2012 and the resort actively supports same-sex weddings — not just tolerates them.
"This is the property where couples send me 'we can't believe this is real' messages from the bungalow deck. After 20 years in this industry, Palafitos still surprises people in person."
Who Palafitos is the right fit for
Palafitos isn't a fit for every couple. Here's an honest read.
You'll love Palafitos if:
- The overwater experience is something you've genuinely dreamed of.
- You want photography that competitor weddings can't replicate.
- You're planning an adults-only wedding (18+).
- Your guest count is in the 20-60 range (works up to 120 but ideal under 60).
- You're combining the wedding trip with the honeymoon.
- You want elevated dining — gourmet à la carte, not buffet.
- You're willing to invest in a premium-tier wedding experience.
Palafitos may not be the right fit if:
- You need a family-friendly resort with kids' programming.
- Your wedding is 120+ guests (capacity limits).
- You're working with a budget-conscious wedding budget — Palafitos is premium-priced.
- You want guests in budget-friendly accommodations (the bungalows are premium; though El Dorado Maroma next door has more range).
- You're set on a traditional beach-only aesthetic without the overwater element.
What it actually costs to get married at Palafitos
Palafitos is a premium property, and the pricing reflects that. The resort offers tiered wedding packages — the published packages range from approximately $1,500 for a basic ceremony-only package up to roughly $13,500+ for the Memorable Moments Ultimate package (which includes a four-course private dinner reception, signature cocktails, decorated venue, and a Celestial Honeymoon Special Package for the couple).
Group benefits matter here too. As your room block grows — particularly when you have guests booking at the adjacent El Dorado Maroma — the package fees often get discounted or partially waived, and we negotiate additional perks for the couple (room upgrades, decor credits, complimentary cocktail hours). For weddings of 30+ guests, the cumulative value of these benefits is typically $5,000-$12,000.
The overwater bungalow accommodations themselves are premium-priced. Plan for approximately $700-$1,200 per bungalow per night for the couple's own stay, depending on bungalow category and season. Your wedding guests staying at El Dorado Maroma have more accommodation flexibility and price points.

Travel logistics
Palafitos sits about 45 minutes south of Cancun International Airport (CUN), located at Km 55.3 of the Cancún-Tulum highway. Direct flights from most major US cities, no visa required for US travelers, 3-5 hour flight times, and round-trip airport transfers are included in the More Inclusive program.
One logistics note: because Palafitos is reached by the pier from El Dorado Maroma, guests staying at El Dorado Maroma can walk to Palafitos for wedding events but they don't have direct overwater access. That's an exclusive perk of staying in the bungalows themselves.
When to start planning your Palafitos wedding
For Palafitos specifically, 14-18 months ahead is the right timeline. The Sky Deck books up early, especially for peak-season dates (December through April), and the overwater bungalows themselves have only 30 keys — meaning the couple's accommodations need to be locked in well in advance. Smaller weddings can sometimes be planned in 8-12 months if dates are flexible.
