Most couples who come to us start the conversation with "we want a wedding in Cancun." Almost none of them actually want a wedding in Cancun. What they want is the Mexican Caribbean — turquoise water, powder-soft sand, an all-inclusive resort that handles everything. And once we walk through the geography, almost all of them end up in Riviera Maya instead.

This is the 80-mile stretch of coastline running south from Cancun International Airport — a string of resort areas, jungle, cenotes, and some of the best beaches in the world. It's where the wedding-quality resorts cluster, where our couples have the most consistently great experiences, and where we've personally visited dozens of properties over the past 20 years.

Here's what we've actually learned about planning a destination wedding in Riviera Maya — and how to choose the right sub-region and resort for the wedding you're picturing.

Cancun vs. Riviera Maya — why the distinction matters

The confusion is understandable. "Cancun" is the name everyone knows, the search term everyone uses, and the airport everyone flies into. But Cancun the city and Riviera Maya the region are two different experiences — and most couples planning a wedding actually want the second one.

Cancun's Hotel Zone is the long, narrow strip of high-rise resorts you've seen in spring break photos. It's lively, walkable, full of nightlife, and packed with mega-resorts. There are some lovely properties here, and a handful of them do beautiful weddings — but the overall vibe skews younger and more party-oriented than what most wedding couples are looking for.

Riviera Maya starts about 15 minutes south of the airport and runs all the way down to the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve. The resorts here are spread out, lower in density, often tucked into jungle, and built specifically for the kind of guest who wants a beach-and-cenotes Mexico experience rather than a club-and-tequila one. This is where most of our destination wedding couples end up — and where most of the resorts we recommend are located.

Bliss Specialist Tip

"You'll still fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN) regardless of which Riviera Maya resort you choose. Transfer times to the resort range from 15 minutes to about 2 hours depending on how far south you go. We coordinate group transfers as part of every wedding package."

The four sub-regions of Riviera Maya — and how to choose

Riviera Maya isn't one place. It's a region with distinct sub-areas, each with its own personality. Choosing the right one matters more than couples realize — the difference between Playa del Carmen and Tulum isn't just driving distance, it's a completely different wedding experience.

Northern Riviera Maya: Playa Mujeres & Costa Mujeres (closest to the airport)

This is the area just north of Cancun — technically the Cancun region for some properties, but with a completely different feel than the Hotel Zone. Playa Mujeres and the adjacent Costa Mujeres have become two of our favorite areas for weddings: only 20-30 minutes from CUN, excellent beaches, and resorts that tend to be newer, more design-driven, and built for adult travelers rather than party crowds.

Best for: Couples who want short transfer times for their guests, modern resorts, and a more refined vibe.

Playa del Carmen

About 45 minutes south of CUN, Playa del Carmen is the only Riviera Maya destination that's also a real town. Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) is the pedestrian-only main street, packed with restaurants, shops, and bars, and your guests can walk into town from many of the resorts. It's a great choice when you want the all-inclusive resort experience but also want guests to have a "town to explore" option for the days they're not at wedding events.

Best for: Wedding groups who want walkability and off-resort options for guests.

Akumal & the Maroma Beach corridor

This is the heart of Riviera Maya — running from about 60 to 90 minutes south of CUN — and it's where some of the most beautiful resorts and best beaches in all of Mexico are located. Maroma Beach is consistently ranked among the top beaches in the world, and the corridor extending south through Akumal toward the halfway point to Tulum includes several of our most-recommended wedding properties. The vibe is quieter, more jungle-immersive, and less commercial than the areas closer to the airport.

Best for: Couples who prioritize beach quality and a tucked-away, resort-focused experience over walkability or nightlife.

Tulum

About two hours south of CUN, Tulum is its own world. The aesthetic is bohemian, eco-chic, and Instagram-famous — beach clubs, boutique hotels, ancient Mayan ruins overlooking the sea. Tulum weddings tend to look very different from the rest of Riviera Maya: smaller, more design-forward, often at boutique properties rather than traditional all-inclusive resorts.

It's a beautiful option for the right couple, but it comes with trade-offs. The drive from the airport is long. The properties are often not all-inclusive, which changes how guest pricing works. And the town has had its share of infrastructure challenges in recent years. For couples drawn to that specific aesthetic, we'll absolutely help plan a Tulum wedding — but we'll be upfront about what's different.

Best for: Couples specifically drawn to the bohemian, design-driven aesthetic who don't mind a longer transfer and a different pricing model.

"Most of our Riviera Maya weddings happen between Playa del Carmen and Akumal. That's the sweet spot for resort quality, beach quality, and reasonable logistics."

What makes Riviera Maya specifically great for weddings

Beyond the resorts themselves, there are a few specific things about Riviera Maya that make it work so well for destination weddings.

The beaches actually deliver

Caribbean beaches vary enormously in quality. Some look great in marketing photos and disappoint in person. Riviera Maya beaches — particularly along the Maroma corridor — really do look like the photos. The sand is fine and white, the water is the color you're imagining, and the shoreline is wide enough to set up a beautiful ceremony without feeling crowded.

Cenotes for engagement and post-wedding photos

The Yucatán Peninsula has thousands of cenotes — natural freshwater sinkholes in the limestone — and many of them are stunning. Couples increasingly use cenotes for "trash the dress" shoots, engagement photos, or post-wedding portrait sessions. They're a uniquely Riviera Maya feature and produce images you can't get anywhere else.

Ceremony variety

Beach ceremony, garden ceremony, rooftop ceremony, overwater bungalow ceremony, Mayan cultural ceremony with a shaman, ceremony inside the property's wedding chapel — Riviera Maya resorts offer all of it. The major properties have dedicated wedding departments that have been doing this for decades, and they've built out the venue options to match nearly any aesthetic.

Established wedding infrastructure

This matters more than couples realize. The resort wedding coordinators in Riviera Maya have planned thousands of weddings. They know what works, they have relationships with every local vendor, and they have systems for handling everything from group flight arrivals to outside vendor approvals. You're not their first wedding — and that experience translates directly into fewer surprises on your wedding day.

The resorts we recommend — and have personally visited

These are the Riviera Maya resorts we book most often for weddings, and where we have firsthand experience. Each one is great for a specific kind of couple, not all couples.

Secrets Maroma Beach

Located directly on Maroma Beach, this adults-only resort is one of our most-recommended properties for couples who want the absolute best beach experience. I've stayed at Secrets Maroma personally, and the beach truly does live up to its reputation as one of the finest in the world. The wedding department is excellent, the beach ceremony venues are stunning, and the AAA Five Diamond service standard means everything runs smoothly. Best for couples prioritizing beach quality and a refined, adults-only atmosphere.

El Dorado Casitas Royale

Adults-only, gourmet-inclusive, and one of the most established wedding programs in Riviera Maya. The Lomas Hospitality More Inclusive™ program means the food is genuinely elevated rather than buffet-style, and the wedding venues across the property give couples real flexibility — beach, garden, rooftop, chapel. I've personally stayed at all of the El Dorado properties many times, and Casitas Royale remains one of my go-to recommendations for couples who care about food quality and want a wedding program that's done it all before. Best for couples who care a lot about cuisine and want an established, well-oiled wedding operation.

El Dorado Palafitos

The only overwater bungalows in Mexico, sitting directly over Maroma Beach. For couples who've dreamed of an overwater experience but want the convenience of Mexico rather than the long flight to Bora Bora or the Maldives, this is the answer. Wedding ceremonies here can take place directly on the overwater deck. As part of the El Dorado portfolio I've stayed at multiple times, I can speak directly to how special this property is — the glass-floor panels, the private infinity pool in each bungalow, and the ladder access into the Caribbean are genuinely unlike anything else in Mexico. Best for couples who want a uniquely photographic setting and are willing to invest in the experience.

Atelier Playa Mujeres

Just north of Cancun in the Playa Mujeres area, Atelier is one of the most genuinely refined all-inclusive experiences in Mexico. Thirteen restaurants, a celebrity chef signature concept, a 38,750 square foot NUUP spa, and a Greg Norman golf course on site. The aesthetic is contemporary art-driven — every suite has a private balcony facing the Caribbean. Both Lindsay and Cally on our team have stayed at Atelier, and it's consistently one of our most-recommended properties for couples who want a luxury wedding with serious dining and design pedigree. Best for couples who want a high-end wedding experience with strong restaurant variety and an art-forward aesthetic.

Secrets Akumal

More intimate than its larger Secrets siblings, with winding walkways, secluded pools, and a quieter feel. The setting is genuinely picturesque, and the adults-only environment works well for couples who want their wedding to feel like a private retreat rather than a large resort experience. Kyle on our team has stayed at Secrets Akumal, and I've visited the property personally — between us, we have a clear sense of how it compares to the larger Secrets properties and which couples it's the right fit for. Best for smaller wedding groups (20-40 guests) who want a more intimate property.

Unico 20°87°

Located about an hour and 15 minutes south of CUN — roughly halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum — Unico 20°87° takes its name from the latitude and longitude coordinates of its location. This adults-only, AAA Five Diamond resort offers a distinctly modern Mexican design experience, with locally sourced cuisine, art and decor by local artisans, and a "Local Host" butler assigned to every room. Lindsay on our team has stayed at Unico and consistently recommends it for couples who want a wedding experience that feels rooted in Mexico's culture rather than a generic luxury all-inclusive. With seven wedding venues (including a beach gazebo and the Costerra Terrace overlooking the ocean), it accommodates everything from intimate elopements to larger celebrations. Best for couples who want a culturally immersive, design-forward wedding with strong food and service.

Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres

One of the newer additions to the Costa Mujeres area, just 12 miles north of Cancun and only about 30 minutes from the airport. This adults-only, AAA Five Diamond resort offers swim-out suites, oceanfront infinity pools, and a 29,000 square foot spa. I've stayed at both Playa Blanca and the neighboring Secrets Playa Mujeres, and Playa Blanca is the one I recommend — the newer build, the design, and the overall feel of the property all stood out to me as the better experience for a wedding group. The secluded white-sand beach setting is excellent for ceremonies, and the contemporary aesthetic makes for beautiful wedding photography. Best for couples who want a refined, adults-only experience with easy guest logistics.

Bliss Specialist Tip

"Between me and the specialists on my team, we've personally stayed at every one of these resorts — many of them multiple times. That matters because resort marketing materials all look similar, but the actual experience of getting married at each of them is quite different. We'll match you to the right one based on your guest count, your budget, and what kind of wedding you're actually picturing."

Legal vs. symbolic ceremonies in Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo (the Mexican state Riviera Maya sits in) does allow foreign couples to legally marry there — but the process involves blood tests, four witnesses, a Spanish-language ceremony, and translated documents. It's doable, but it adds complexity and cost.

Most of our couples choose a symbolic ceremony at their destination and handle the legal marriage at home — usually with a quick courthouse visit the week before or after the trip. This eliminates the paperwork complexity, ensures your marriage is recognized in your home state immediately, and lets you focus on the celebration itself. The ceremony at the resort looks identical either way; the difference is purely administrative.

That said, if having the legal ceremony in Mexico matters to you, we'll walk you through the specific requirements and timeline. The resort wedding coordinator handles most of the paperwork — your specialist coordinates everything else.

Travel logistics — getting your guests there

One of the reasons Riviera Maya works so well for destination weddings from the US is the travel infrastructure.

Cancun International Airport (CUN)

CUN is one of the busiest international airports in Latin America, with direct flights from nearly every major US city. Most of our couples' guests can get there with a single nonstop flight in 3-5 hours. There are no visa requirements for US citizens, and customs is efficient.

Transfer times by sub-region

  • Playa Mujeres / North Cancun area: 20-30 minutes from CUN.
  • Playa del Carmen: 45-60 minutes from CUN.
  • Akumal & Maroma corridor: 60-90 minutes from CUN.
  • Tulum: Approximately 2 hours from CUN (or use the newer Tulum airport for select flights).

We coordinate group transfers for every wedding — your guests don't navigate this on their own.

Best time of year for a Riviera Maya wedding

The dry season — roughly November through April — is the most popular for weddings. The weather is reliably beautiful, humidity is lower, and rain is uncommon. May and June are warmer and can be lovely. Hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk in September and October — we generally steer couples away from those two months specifically, though we book weddings safely throughout the rest of the year.

When to start planning your Riviera Maya wedding

The right timeline for a Riviera Maya destination wedding is 12-18 months from your target date. Popular dates and resorts book up early, especially in the peak January-April window. Smaller weddings can sometimes be planned in 6-9 months, but you'll have fewer resort options and less time to give your guests for travel arrangements.

Our complete destination wedding planning timeline walks through exactly what happens at each stage of the planning process.
