St. Lucia Honeymoon Guide: The Most Romantic Island in the Caribbean

Year after year, St. Lucia tops the list of the world's best honeymoon destinations — and it deserves every bit of that reputation. The island is genuinely, breathtakingly beautiful in a way that photographs don't fully capture. The Pitons — twin volcanic peaks rising dramatically from the Caribbean Sea — create a backdrop so dramatic it feels almost theatrical. The rainforests are lush and alive. The beaches are intimate rather than crowded. And the resorts are designed, almost universally, with romance as the primary offering.

St. Lucia is not the island for couples who want nonstop nightlife and a party atmosphere. It's the island for couples who want to feel like they've escaped the world entirely — where the pace slows down, the scenery does the work, and every meal, every excursion, every evening feels unhurried and intentional. If that's the honeymoon you're after, there may be no better place in the Caribbean.

Why St. Lucia for Your Honeymoon

St. Lucia has been voted the world's leading honeymoon destination multiple times — and while awards don't tell the whole story, in this case they reflect something real. The island has a quality that's difficult to put into words: an intimacy, a lushness, a sense of being genuinely away from everything. A few things stand out:

The scenery is extraordinary. The Pitons — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are unlike anything else in the Caribbean. Watching them emerge from the sea as your catamaran approaches from the water is a moment couples describe as genuinely awe-inspiring. The rainforest interior, the volcanic springs, the waterfalls — St. Lucia feels like a living landscape rather than just a beach.

The resorts are built for couples. Unlike some Caribbean islands where family resorts dominate, St. Lucia's most celebrated properties are designed specifically for romance — boutique, intimate, with private plunge pools, open-air suites, and the kind of seclusion that makes a honeymoon feel genuinely private.

The pace is right. St. Lucia rewards couples who slow down. The less you try to fit in, the more the island's atmosphere works its magic. This is not a rushing-around-to-see-everything destination — it's a settle-in-and-breathe destination.

"St. Lucia is the most romantic island in the Caribbean — and it's not particularly close. The combination of the Pitons, the intimate resorts, and the pace of the island creates something genuinely unlike anywhere else."

North vs. South — The Most Important Decision You'll Make

The single most important planning decision for a St. Lucia honeymoon isn't which resort to choose — it's which part of the island to stay in. The north and south offer dramatically different experiences, and the right choice depends entirely on what you want from your trip.

Most Convenient
The North — Rodney Bay / Gros Islet

The north is where you'll find the best beaches, the most all-inclusive resorts, and the liveliest atmosphere. Sandals Grand Bay is located here, along with Pigeon Island National Park and the famous Friday Night Street Party in Gros Islet. Closer to the smaller SLU airport, and with easier access to restaurants and activities outside the resort.

You can still visit the Pitons from the north — it's about a 60–90 minute scenic drive south — but you won't wake up to them outside your window.

Best for: Couples who want great beaches, all-inclusive convenience, and the option to explore.

Our honest take: For most honeymooners, we recommend the south — specifically the Soufrière area — for the most genuinely romantic experience. The scenery is extraordinary and the intimacy of the resorts there is unmatched. That said, couples who prioritize beach quality, all-inclusive value, and social atmosphere will be very happy in the north.

Best Resorts for Honeymooners

For the Couple Who Wants the Ultimate Luxury Experience

Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort
Soufrière · South · Boutique · Adults & Families

Set between the Pitons on a pristine white sand beach — one of the most beautiful beach settings on the island — Sugar Beach offers a perfect blend of luxury, intimacy, and natural drama. The resort occupies a former sugar plantation, and the 18th-century estate buildings have been beautifully restored. Villas and bungalows are scattered through tropical gardens and along the beach, each with a private plunge pool. The Rainforest Spa is consistently ranked among the best in the Caribbean.

For the Couple Who Wants All-Inclusive Luxury

Sandals Halcyon Beach
Castries · North · Adults-Only · All-Inclusive

The most intimate of St. Lucia's three Sandals properties — a smaller, quieter resort with a beautiful beach, lush tropical gardens, and a more relaxed atmosphere than Grand Bay. Excellent golf access (two courses, including a Greg Norman-designed championship course), and full access to the other two Sandals St. Lucia properties. A great choice for couples who want the Sandals all-inclusive experience without a large-resort feel.

Sandals Regency La Toc
Castries · North · Adults-Only · All-Inclusive

Perched on a bluff above the Caribbean with dramatic cliffside views, Sandals Regency La Toc offers some of the most striking scenery of any Sandals property — including 22 Rondoval Butler Villas with private pools and rooftop access. The resort has a more elevated, villa-resort feel than its sister properties, with meandering paths through lush hillside gardens and a long beach below. A strong choice for couples who want the Sandals all-inclusive with a boutique villa atmosphere.

For the Couple Who Wants Something Different

Ladera Resort
Soufrière · South · Boutique · Open-Air Design

Like Jade Mountain, Ladera is built into the hillside above Soufrière with the Pitons framing every view — and like Jade Mountain, every villa has an open wall facing the sea. The design is eco-conscious and open-air, with no air conditioning (the mountain breeze does the work). The award-winning Dasheene Restaurant is consistently rated one of the best in all of St. Lucia. A more affordable alternative to Jade Mountain with a similar philosophy of bringing the landscape inside.

Things to Do as a Couple in St. Lucia

St. Lucia has more to offer outside the resort than almost any other Caribbean island. We always recommend building at least a day or two of excursions into your itinerary — the island rewards exploration.

  • Catamaran cruise to the Pitons — The classic St. Lucia experience. Sail south from Rodney Bay, approaching the Pitons from the water, with stops for snorkeling and a beach picnic. The photos from the water are extraordinary. Most cruises include an open bar and lunch.
  • Hike Gros Piton — For adventurous couples, the guided hike up Gros Piton (the more accessible of the two peaks) takes 3–6 hours and rewards you with some of the most dramatic views in the Caribbean. A guide is required and is arranged through the local authority.
  • Sulphur Springs mud bath — St. Lucia is home to the world's only drive-in volcano. Cover each other in mineral-rich volcanic mud at Sulphur Springs Park — it's genuinely fun, surprisingly romantic, and said to be excellent for your skin.
  • Snorkeling at Anse Chastanet — One of the best snorkeling sites in the Caribbean, right off the beach at Anse Chastanet resort. The reef is vibrant and the water clarity is exceptional. Sandals guests can scuba dive for free (PADI-certified, max two tanks per day).
  • Sunset cruise — A private or small-group sunset sailing along St. Lucia's west coast, with the Pitons glowing in the evening light. One of the most reliably romantic hours you'll spend anywhere.
  • Diamond Falls and Botanical Gardens — Mineral waterfall changing color due to volcanic minerals, set within beautiful botanical gardens. A lovely half-day excursion from either the north or south.
  • Friday Night Street Party, Gros Islet — The longest-running street party in St. Lucia. Local food, music, dancing, and an authentic Jamaican atmosphere. Worth experiencing if you're staying in the north and enjoy getting off-resort for an evening.
  • Private villa dinner — Many resorts can arrange a private candlelit dinner on your balcony or terrace, with the Pitons in the distance. One of the most romantic meals you'll ever have.
  • Couples spa treatment — St. Lucia is exceptional for spa experiences — particularly Jade Mountain's spa and Ladera's Lévé spa, both built into the natural environment with views of the Pitons.

Best Time to Visit St. Lucia

December to April is the dry season and peak time for a honeymoon — sunny skies, minimal rainfall, and warm temperatures in the low-to-mid 80s°F. This is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit, so book well in advance.

May and June are our favourite shoulder season months. Rates drop significantly, crowds thin out, and the island turns even more lushly green. Rainfall is typically brief and tropical rather than all-day affairs. Many couples find this the sweet spot of value and experience.

July through November is hurricane season, with October being the peak risk month. Travel insurance with cancel-for-any-reason coverage is essential if you're booking this window. That said, hurricane-related cancellations are far less common than the "hurricane season" label suggests — many couples visit during this period with no issues at all.

Planning Tips for St. Lucia

Two airports — book the right one. St. Lucia has two airports: Hewanorra International (UVF) in the south, and George F.L. Charles Airport (SLU) in the north. Most international US flights land at UVF. If you're staying in the south near Soufrière, UVF is convenient. If you're staying in the north near Rodney Bay, UVF means a 90-minute scenic drive (or a short helicopter transfer — genuinely worth it for a honeymoon). SLU is closer to the north but handles fewer international flights.

Consider a helicopter transfer. The 15-minute helicopter flight from UVF to the north of the island is a spectacular way to arrive on your honeymoon — and an extraordinary introduction to the island's scenery. It's not cheap, but it's an experience. Many resorts can arrange this as part of a honeymoon package.

St. Lucia is not a budget destination. If your combined budget for flights and accommodation is under $5,000, St. Lucia may not be the right fit. The island's most celebrated properties are genuinely expensive, and the experience is somewhat diminished if you're stretching uncomfortably. There are excellent Caribbean alternatives at lower price points — we're happy to suggest them.

Book excursions in advance. The catamaran cruise, the Piton hike, and popular spa treatments all fill up — especially during peak season. Book before you arrive, not after you check in.

Tips From a Real Bliss Split Stay

One of our couples split their St. Lucia honeymoon between Sandals Grand Bay and Viceroy Sugar Beach and rated the trip a 9 out of 10. Their upgraded villa at Sugar Beach was a highlight. They passed along two tips we now share with every couple heading there:

  • Ask us about tipping before you go. Expectations differ between resorts, and at butler-service properties it isn't always clear when a tip is expected. We'll tell you what's customary at each one.
  • Order "bottled" water at Sugar Beach. Asking for "still" or "sparkling" brings a glass bottle at roughly $15 to $16. Regular bottled water is about $2 to $3.
