Stone Cold Sober at a Sandals Resort: What It’s Really Like
Stone Cold Sober at a
Sandals Resort: What It's
Really Like
One of the most common questions we hear from sober and sober-curious travelers is some version of: "Is there anything for me at an all-inclusive resort if I don't drink?"
It's a completely fair question. All-inclusive resorts are marketed heavily around unlimited drinks. The imagery on their websites — poolside cocktails, champagne toasts, sunset rum punches — doesn't exactly scream "sober-friendly." And when you're paying a premium rate, you want to know the experience you're paying for actually works for your lifestyle.
So I decided to find out firsthand. I stayed at Sandals Curaçao for four nights without touching a drop of alcohol. No wine at dinner, no cocktails by the pool, no champagne toast on arrival. Just me, my mocktails, and a completely honest experiment.
What I found surprised me — in the best way possible.
Was I the Only Person Not Drinking?
This is the fear most sober travelers carry going in — that you'll arrive and feel conspicuously out of place while everyone around you works through the open bar. I didn't find that to be true at all.
During my four-night stay at Sandals Curaçao, I didn't see anyone who appeared heavily intoxicated. Not at the pool, not at dinner, not at the evening entertainment. Most guests were there to relax — they lounged by the pool, snorkeled, played golf, or went on excursions. Drinking was happening, but it wasn't the centerpiece.
This makes sense when you think about it. The typical Sandals guest is a couple on a honeymoon or anniversary trip. They're not there for a party — they're there for each other. Sandals has a distinctly different energy than a party-forward resort. The music plays, people mingle, but it never felt like a competition to see who could drink the most.
I was completely comfortable the entire time. Nobody noticed or cared what was in my glass.
Sandals is couples-only at every resort. That single policy changes everything about the atmosphere. You're not navigating rowdy bachelor parties or groups of strangers doing shots. The guest profile skews toward people who want a romantic, refined experience — which happens to align perfectly with sober travel.
The Mocktail Situation: Better Than Expected
Here's where I was genuinely impressed. I was expecting to end up sipping sugary virgin daiquiris or plain soda water with a lime all week. That's not what happened.
The bartenders at Sandals Curaçao were genuinely talented at creating non-alcoholic drinks that felt special — not afterthoughts. When I explained I wasn't drinking, they got creative. Fresh herbs, sparkling water, tropical fruits, house-made syrups. Real bartending craft applied to zero-proof drinks.
- Fresh herb and citrus sparkling water (cucumber, mint, lime — bartender's own creation)
- Mango and passionfruit mocktail with fresh ginger and a tajín rim
- Cold brew coffee with coconut cream — available at the coffee bar all day
- Fresh-pressed juices at breakfast: watermelon, pineapple, green juice
- Sparkling water and specialty teas in the afternoon
- Virgin versions of classic cocktails — made with real effort, not just juice in a glass
Staying hydrated and genuinely enjoying my drinks was effortless the entire trip. I never felt like I was missing out — I felt like I was getting something specifically made for me.

Book Free ConsultationWhat You're Really Paying For at Sandals
This is the key reframe for sober travelers considering an all-inclusive resort: you're not paying for alcohol. You're paying for a complete luxury experience — and most of it has nothing to do with what's in your glass.
At Sandals Curaçao specifically, the inclusions that made the trip feel exceptional were all non-alcoholic by nature:
| Included Experience | Alcohol Required? | Worth It for Sober Travelers? |
|---|---|---|
| All dining — multiple restaurants, no reservations | No | ✓ Absolutely |
| Airport transfers both ways | No | ✓ Great value |
| Snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding | No | ✓ Genuinely wonderful |
| Scuba diving (certified divers) | No | ✓ Outstanding |
| Butler service (Butler Elite categories) | No | ✓ Transformative |
| Live entertainment and music evenings | No | ✓ Relaxed and enjoyable |
| Spa access (treatments extra) | No | ✓ Perfect for sober travelers |
| Gratuities for all staff | No | ✓ Stress-free perk |
| Unlimited alcohol | Yes | Skip — still getting everything else |
When you lay it out like that, it becomes clear: the alcohol is one line item in a very long list of inclusions. If you're not drinking, you're still accessing tremendous value — possibly more value per dollar than most guests, since you're using all the other inclusions fully instead of spending half the day at the bar.
Evenings Without the Hangover
I genuinely enjoyed the evenings at Sandals Curaçao more than I expected. The atmosphere was social but calm — exactly what you want when you're there with a partner and not trying to shout over a DJ.
While many guests gathered at the lobby bar, just as many settled into dessert and coffee on the patio, listened to the live music at a comfortable volume, or went for a sunset walk along the beach before an early dinner. Nobody was on a mission to close the bar down.
I turned in early most nights — not because I felt excluded, but because I was genuinely relaxed and content. That's not something I could have said at a party resort.

Sandals Curaçao was a wonderful choice for my sober stay, but it's worth knowing that some Sandals properties are better suited to sober travelers than others based on their overall vibe and guest profile.
Sandals Curaçao — Where I stayed. Beautifully designed, peaceful atmosphere, outstanding dining. The island itself is calm and scenic. Excellent choice.
Sandals Grand Bay — Stunning overwater bungalows, spectacular scenery. Guests here tend to be focused on the natural beauty rather than the bar. Very sober-friendly energy.
Sandals Royal Barbados — One of the more refined, adult properties in the collection. Great dining scene. The rooftop pool is a highlight. Calm atmosphere consistently.
Sandals South Coast, Jamaica — Overwater bungalows and a beautiful lagoon. Guests tend to be on honeymoon and focused on each other. One of the most romantic properties in the collection.
Sandals Grenada — Probably the most intimate and laid-back of all the Sandals properties. Grenada itself is the Caribbean's "spice island" — slow-paced, natural, and peaceful. Outstanding for sober travelers who want total tranquility.
If you're sober and this is your honeymoon, we'd lean toward Sandals Curaçao, Royal Barbados, or Grenada as our top three picks. All three have a naturally refined, low-key atmosphere that doesn't revolve around the bar. The Jamaica properties are excellent too — just slightly livelier, which is still far calmer than most resorts.
Is Sandals Worth It If You
Don't Drink? Yes — absolutely.
The experience is built around luxury, service, scenery, and connection — not alcohol. If you value those things, not drinking doesn't diminish the trip at all. In some ways, you'll enjoy it more.
